Mitchell Tseng, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology MCPC2009
Dr. Tseng is Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He also serves as Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI) and Zhejiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute (ZAMI) of HKUST.
He received his PhD and Master's degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, BS degree in Nuclear Engineering from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. After serving in industry for two decades, he joined HKUST in 1993 as the founding department head of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management.
Previously, his academic experience includes faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He started his career developing key enabling manufacturing technologies for the IT industry. Some of them, including a process for producing polygons commonly used in mid range and high end laser printers, are still widely used in industry. He has also been recognized as a pioneer in managing the implementation of Artificial Intelligence for industrial applications (computer configuration at DEC). He was the Chief Engineer for Systems Integration Business before returning to academia.
Professor Tseng is an elected fellow of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is internationally known for his work in global manufacturing, mass customization, low volume and high mix production. He published papers in CIRP, IEEM, ASME, IIE and other journals based on insights in industrial research and consulting projects.
